History
The origins of Boxx date back to 1994, when the founder began designing and manufacturing
homewares and gifts. The success of this venture led to Australia-wide distribution
and an expansion of the product range to include furniture and fashion.
In 1998, one of the first lifestyle concept stores in Australia opened under the
Boxx brand. The second Boxx store opened in Reservoir Street, Surry Hills in 2001
but, with a lack of space, the range was limited to gifts and homewares. By early
2006 Boxx had outgrown Reservoir Street and a decision was made to close it. But
a new concept store was already in the planning.
Concept
Boxx on Flinders Street, Darlinghurst commenced trading in June 2006. The opening
of this generously proportioned space allows Boxx to return to its combined homewares
and fashion concept, as well as extend the range into artifacts and collectables
from all over the world.
The concept behind Boxx is 'simple opulence'. It seeks to avoid the austere minimalist
look, and is instead about sumptuous design pieces and mysterious artifacts which
tell hundreds of stories. Boxx is all about the details, simply presented, but with
a hint of extravagance.
Boxx is particularly excited about Hu, its new fashion label. Currently under development,
Hu will complement the gifts and homewares ranges perfectly. Hu is about unique
apparel and one-off items for people who want individual designs that are competitive
with quality items found in chain stores. And, as a local designer and manufacturer
Boxx will embrace and stock other Australian designers as well.
Location
Boxx's street front location is the corner of Flinders Street and Short Street,
Surry Hills/Darlinghurst, not far from the upscale St Margaret's apartments on Bourke
Street. Boxx is ideally positioned between the Surry Hills design and 'rag trade'
precinct and the high-end Paddington fashion district.
